Robert Schecter was born and raised in New York City. He is a graduate of Queens College and the Yale School of Art and Architecture. After receiving his Master of Fine Arts Degree in 1969, he moved to Manhattan and eventually to his loft on Greene Street where he has been working in his art studio since 1972.
In the early 1970’s he became a faculty member of the Fine Arts Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology, achieving the rank of Full Professor. He was awarded two Grants by the State of New York in Fine Arts and was chairperson of the Fine Arts Department for several years. A large collection of his metal sculpture was presented at the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2001.
Robert Schecter has produced a large, varied, body of work in both painting and sculpture. His work has been exhibited in many solo exhibitions and group shows. He was represented by the Bertha Urdang Gallery in New York City, exhibiting his work in several solo and group shows. A large installation of his work at the De Cordova Museum in Lincoln Mass., "Beyond Measurement", followed. His work has been shown at Harvard University, in the exhibition "Smart Art", a show of artists included in the book " Smart Art" written by the art critic Joseph Mascheck. Selected shows include exhibitions at the Painting Center, the Sculpture Center, the Isreal Museum, the Aldrich Museum, the M55 Gallery, and the Able Fine Arts Gallery in Chelsea.
